What this tool actually does
It extracts the text from a PDF and saves it as an editable Word file. It is worth being clear about the limit up front, because most sites offering "PDF to Word" are vague about it: the layout of the original is not rebuilt. You get the words, in reading order, in a document you can edit — not a replica of the page.
The reason is structural. A PDF does not store paragraphs, headings or tables. It stores characters positioned at coordinates on a page, much like ink on paper. Recovering the original structure from those coordinates is guesswork, and doing it well needs far more than a browser can reasonably run. Services that promise a faithful conversion do the work on their own servers, which means your document is uploaded to them.
This page does not upload anything, so it offers the honest version of the feature instead.
When this is the right tool
- You need to reuse the wording of a document — a contract, a report, an article — and will format it yourself.
- You want to quote or translate part of a PDF that will not let you select text comfortably.
- You need the content in a file that a word processor, screen reader or search tool can handle.
When it is not
If you need the finished document to look like the PDF — an invoice template, a designed report, a form — text extraction will disappoint you. Recreating the layout by hand from the extracted text is usually faster than correcting a bad automatic conversion.
Scanned PDFs
A PDF produced by a scanner or a phone camera contains images of text, not text. Nothing can be extracted from it without optical character recognition, which this tool does not perform. If the extraction comes back empty, that is almost always the reason — try selecting text in the PDF with your mouse: if you cannot, neither can this tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened and read inside your browser, and the Word file is written on your own device. Nothing is transmitted.
Will the Word file look like my PDF?
No. This extracts the text into an editable document; it does not rebuild the page layout, columns, images or tables. Faithful layout conversion requires server-side processing, which would mean uploading your file.
Nothing was extracted from my file. Why?
The PDF most likely contains scanned images rather than text. Try selecting the text in a PDF reader — if you cannot select it, there is no text to extract and optical character recognition would be needed.
Can I get a .txt file instead?
Yes. Choose plain text before extracting if you only want the raw words without a Word document wrapper.
Are tables preserved?
No. Table cells are extracted as ordinary text in reading order, because a PDF does not record which characters belonged to a table.
